Although making mistakes with DE and HET doesn't limit the communication in Dutch too much, it is important to learn which words are DE and which are HET at some point. Why? Because it has a big influence on grammar. DE and HET are relevant for the -e in adjectives, for the relative clause and for many pronouns.
It's hard to learn the articles of nouns, although there are some rules for HET and DE.
Something that works for many students, is keeping a HET-list. Every time you learn a HET-word, you put it on the list and study it. The rest of the words, are then DE-words.
Fact: around 75% of the nouns are DE-words.
We've made a list with HET-words to get you started. Of course, the list is not complete, but it are frequently used words.
