How do you refer to things in Dutch? Which pronouns should you use? Below you will find an explanation about the Dutch pronouns for referring to things.

1. De-woorden (singular)

  • De taart is lekker.
  • The cake is tasty.
  • ---------------------
  • Hij is lekker.
  • It is tasty.
  • ---------------------
  • Wil je hem proeven?
  • Do you want to try it?

All de-words are referred to as hij (subject) or hem (object).


2. Het-woorden (singular)

  • Het boek is mooi.
  • The book is beautiful.
  • ---------------------
  • Het is mooi.
  • It is beautiful.
  • ---------------------
  • Wil je het lenen?
  • Do you want to borrow it?

All het-words are referred to as het (subject) / het (object).


3. Plural: Ze

  • De taarten zijn lekker.
  • Ze zijn lekker.
  • Wil je ze proeven?
  • ---------------------
  • De boeken zijn mooi.
  • Ze zijn mooi.
  • Wil je ze lenen?
