Abbreviations (Afkortingen) in Dutch

You come across Dutch abbreviations everywhere: in (business) e-mails, information on shop windows, in brochures and on traffic signs. We discuss some commonly used abbreviations here.

• a.u.b.
• This means alstublieft (please). Sometimes you can still see the French version: s.v.p. (s'il vous plait). A.u.b. is not only written, you can hear someone say it.
• Example: Hier a.u.b. geen fietsen plaatsen.

• a.s.
• A.s. stands for aanstaande (upcoming).
• Example: Ik ga a.s. vrijdag naar Parijs.

• bijv. De afkorting staat voor bijvoorbeeld (for example).
• Example: Er zijn veel manieren om gezonder te leven. Je kunt bijv. meer gaan sporten of op je voeding letten.

• d.w.z.
• This means dat wil zeggen (that means).
• Example: Ik ben ziek, d.w.z. dat ik je niet kan helpen met verhuizen.

• e.d., enz. & etc.
• En dergelijke (and such), enzovoort (and so on) and et cetera. They mean almost the same.
• Example: Je kunt hier elektrische tandenborstels, scheerapparaten, föhns, e.d. kopen.

• i.v.m.
• This commonly used abbreviation stands for in verband met (in connection with, because of).
• Example: I.v.m. de regen is de voetbalwedstrijd afgelast.

• i.p.v
• Instead of in plaats van you can write i.p.v. (instead of).
• Example: Zullen we naar het strand gaan i.p.v. naar het bos? Het is zulk lekker weer!

• m.b.t.
• This means met betrekking tot (concerning). This is a formal way to say over (about).
• Example: Ik heb een vraag met betrekking tot het huurcontract.

• m.i.v.
• Met ingang van means vanaf (from, starting from).
• Example: Wij verhogen onze prijzen m.i.v. 5 januari.

• m.u.v.
• This abbreviation looks like the previous one, but means met uitzondering van (with the exception of).
• Example: Wij zijn elke dag te bereiken, m.u.v. feestdagen.

• n.a.v.
• This abbreviation means naar aanleiding van (in response to).
• Example: De weg is gesloten n.a.v. het ongeluk.

• o.a.
• This abbreviation is used very frequently and means onder andere (among other things).
• Example: Ik heb veel gereisd. Ik ben o.a. in China, Japan en Peru geweest.

• t.a.v.
• You will find this abbreviation a lot on envelopes or in the subject of an e-mail. T.a.v. stands for for ter attentie van (to the attention of).
• Example: T.a.v. de heer Janssen.

• t/m
• t/m means tot en met (up to and including).
• Example: Je kunt t/m 23 september op deze functie solliciteren.

• z.s.m.
• This means zo snel mogelijk (as soon as possible).
• Example: Wil je z.s.m. reageren?
